We Bengalis go mad over this fish, and we call it Ilish which is also known as Hilsa.....nobody else in the world can understand a Bengali's love for Ilish.

llish Bhapa is one of the signature Bengali dishes which can be enjoyed with steamed white rice. Today we’ll make Sorse Ilish or Hilsa in Mustard Sauce Gravy. It's a very easy peasy recipe and the fish retains its flavor because of the very few ingredients are used to cook this delectable dish. Just mustard seeds paste, coconut milk, salt, turmeric and you're done.

I have already shared a recipe of how to cook Ilish Bhapa in microwave. You can check the recipe here, but this time we'll make this dish in frying pan. Either way you cook this dish taste awesome.

I have used coconut milk here instead of grated coconut you because that gives a smooth texture of this dish without comprising upon the taste. You can use whatever you like. So, let's start with the recipe:

Ingredients:

1. Hilsa Steaks: 4 pieces
2. Black Mustard Seeds: 4 tbsp
3. Yellow Mustard Seeds: 2 tbsp
4. Coconut Cream: 1/3 cup
5. Turmeric Powder: 1 tsp
5. Salt to taste
6. Mustard Oil (preferable, you can use vegetable oil too): for cooking
7. Green chilies: 4-5

Method:

1. Wash the fish pieces and pat dry them with a paper towel.

2. Marinate the fish with salt and turmeric powder and keep it aside for 10-15 mins.

3. Meanwhile make a paste with mustard seeds, salt, turmeric powder and green chilies. Add water if required, the consistency of this mixture should not be too thin.

4. Take the prepared mustard paste in a bowl, add coconut cream and mustard oil. Mix well.

5. Add the fish pieces in the prepared paste and coat them nicely.

6. Take a heatproof utensil and put in our fish pieces with this mixture into it.

7. Add some green chilies and cover this bowl tightly with a aluminum foil so that the steam doesn’t escape.

8. Let it stand for a minute. Remove the foil and check the consistency of the gravy. If required steam it for another minute.

9. Ilish Bhapa is ready to serve with steamed rice. Enjoy!!
