Idli Burger

Hello Fellas................ I hope everyone is doing fine and staying healthy. In my earlier posts, I have mentioned a series where I'll be sharing some Kids Friendly recipes which are very easy to prepare, and at the same time, kids will love them too. If you have missed those posts then click the recipes name below to get redirected to the recipes:

Today's recipe is Idli Burger: one of my son's favorite. Idli is a very common breakfast in most of the Indian households. It's a very healthy and hassle-free breakfast item if you do the prep work beforehand. On the other hand, we all (especially our kids) love Burger, isn't it? Then how about combining both the items? As you all know I'm a huge fan of fusion dishes and love to do experimental cooking. Sometimes the outcome is a huge disaster and sometimes it's a huge success; basically, it is two sides of the same coin.

So, in this recipe, I have tried to replace the buns in the burger with Rava Idlis. If you want you can go for traditional idlis too. Rava Idlis come handy if you are in a hurry. Just combine the ingredients of Rava Idli, steam them and you're done. If you want the recipe for Rava Idli you can click here (

1. Boiled Potatoes: 4-5 (medium size)
2. Semolina/ Suji: 2 cups
3. Curd: 2 cups
4. Onion (finely chopped): 1 (medium size)
5. Peas: 1/2 cup
6. Ginger-Garlic Paste: 2 tbsp
7. Cumin seeds: 1 tbsp
8. Mustard Seeds: 1 tbsp
9. Curry Leaves: 18-20
10. Oil: 5-6 tbsp
11. Eno: 2 tbsp
12. Tomato Ketchup: 2 tbsp
13. Mayonnaise: 2 tbsp
14. Onion, Cucumber, Tomato: slices

18. Coriander Powder: 1 tsp
19. Chat Masala: 1 tbsp
20. Salt: to taste
21. Coriander Leaves (chopped): a handful
22. Oil: for cooking

Method:

FOR MAKING IDLI:

1. Take a bowl and add semolina, curd, ginger-garlic paste, and salt to taste. Mix well. Add water (2 cups) and combine well. Allow the mixture to rest for 10 minutes.

2. Take steel bowls and grease them with oil.

3. Take the idli batter and add water if required. Just before making the idlis add Eno and mix gently.

4. Pour this batter in the greased bowls. Fill halfway through.

5. Boil water in the pan, place a stand or a steel plate and place the idli bowls on top of it. Cook them for 8-10 minutes on med-high flame.

6. Once done check the Idlis by inserting a knife or a skewer. If it's clean then the Idlis are done. Take them out and allow it to cool down.

7. Once the Idlis are cooled down take them out on a plate. Keep them aside.

FOR MAKING POTATO PATTIES:

1. Heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds. Let them crackle.

2. Add finely chopped onion and cook them until they become soft.

3. Add ginger-garlic paste and fry them until the raw flavor is gone.

4. Mash and add the boiled potatoes and cook the mixture for 2 minutes.

5. Add cumin powder, coriander powder, red chili powder, turmeric powder, chat masala, and salt to taste. Mix well and again cook for 2 minutes on medium heat.

6. Now, it's time to add the peas and mix well.

7. Add the finely chopped coriander leaves, give everything a nice mix, and switch off the flame. Allow it to cool down.

8. Once the mixture is cooled down take a sufficient amount of potato mixture in your hands and shape them in the form of a patty. Keep them aside.

FOR ASSEMBLING THE IDLI-BURGER:

1. Cut the prepared Idlis from the middle.

2. Take both the slices and spread mayonnaise on one slice and tomato ketchup on the other.

3. Add the potato patty and press gently.

4. Place the onion slice, cucumber slices, and tomato slice.

5. Finally, place the other half of the Idli. Similarly, assemble rest of the Idli-Burgers.

FOR MAKING THE TADKA:

1. Heat oil in a pan add mustard seeds, curry leaves, and fry them for a minute on low flame.

2. Once done place the prepared Idli Burgers and toast them from both sides.

3. Take them out on a plate. Garnish them with finely chopped coriander leaves. Enjoy!!
